Artist John Dyer created the amazing painting this limited edition print is reproduced from during his residency at the Eden Project with an Amazon Indian Nixiwaka Yawanawá discovering the spirits of the rainforest. The spirit shown is Yuxi Yuve – the water spirit. All of the water in the Amazon originates from the hair of Yuxi Yuve. This amazing image features the mermaid-like spirit & the powerful boa constrictor in a circular composition of the waterfall, tropical plants, piranhas & butterflies. “The Water Spirit Yuxi Yuve has a real connection for me, she evokes not only the water cycle of the rainforest but also has echoes of Mermaids, stories and Spirits in our own culture. Nixiwaka Yawanawá, an Amazon Indian, selected the Amazon plants around the waterfall at the Eden Project for us to work with so it was natural for me to create a circular composition with the waterfall forming Yuxi Yuve’s hair. The Boa Constrictor features as the power of the rainforest. It is one of the most revered animals of the rainforest. I have included Amazon fish in the water and rainforest butterflies too. Many of the plant forms in the painting are painted from life using the rainforest plants at Eden as reference. My painting that features on this print has a cyclical energy that echoes the natural cycle of life.”
